The practical question and its limits
A signature looks different. Does that prove the document is forged?
Start by identifying what happened and who is authorized to act, separating verifiable records from unproven conclusions. Paper and digital documents, signatures and seals used in contracting, payments or evidence; document type and issuer determine the potentially applicable provision.
Legal framework and scope
In civil and commercial disputes, the Law of Evidence distinguishes denial of attribution of an ordinary document from an allegation of forgery. Article 29 addresses the evidential effect of an ordinary document attributed to its signatory. Article 39 distinguishes an allegation of forgery concerning official or ordinary documents from denial of handwriting, a seal, signature or fingerprint on an ordinary document, and allocates the burden of proof according to the route taken. Review should identify the document type, what is disputed, the available original and how it was used. These are evidential distinctions. Attributing a forgery offence to an individual requires a separate criminal-law assessment; neither the tool nor an apparent difference between document images resolves that question.

What could change the interpretation?
A poor-quality copy, an authorized signature, a disclosed correction or a different version may explain the difference. A record missing from one person’s file may exist elsewhere. Ask authorized custodians about its source, version and date, and record both supporting and contrary evidence.
Records and questions
- Paper original or native digital file
- Transmission and receipt records and version history
- Signing authorizations and lawfully obtained comparison material
- Record of how the document was used and the connected transaction
- Is this an original or a copy, and where did it come from?
- What specific alteration is alleged and who disputes authorship?
- Where was it used, and is there an authorization or another version?
Hypothetical example
Hypothetical example: a payment-order image contains an unclear signature and the original is missing. Image quality does not establish forgery. Record the limitation and ask authorized custodians for the original, transmission record and relevant delegation.
Initial response and readiness
If authorized, identify custodians and the relevant preservation scope while retaining originals and context. Do not alter source files or access personal accounts or devices without authority. If harm continues or proceedings are known, obtain advice on context-specific action. These steps do not automatically call for confrontation, dismissal or reporting. Manage document versions and delegations, preserve originals and record receipt and authorized amendments.
Professional review
Technical questions may require an accountant or another specialist. Their findings on value, images or data flows do not replace analysis of legal responsibility. Identify the prospective client before seeking the case file: company representation and defence of an individual are separate routes, and joint representation is not assumed.
Request a consultation
A paid legal consultation begins with identifying the parties, a conflict check and agreement on scope and fees. It includes an initial review of documents within an agreed scope, a meeting to discuss facts and questions, and a brief written summary of options, missing information and the next step in the agreed language. An internal investigation, settlement, report or representation requires a separate engagement as appropriate.

Consultation and next steps
The consultation is paid. Work starts after identifying the parties, checking conflicts and agreeing scope and fees. It includes an initial review of agreed documents, a meeting and a brief written summary of options, missing information and the next step in the agreed language.
Internal investigation, settlement, reporting and representation are separate engagements. Representation of an affected company and defence of individuals are separate routes subject to conflict checks.
